Peripheral Visions: André Thijssen
“If there is such a thing in photography as a “decisive moment”, the term coined by Henri Cartier-Bresson, then there must also be the opposite––the casual, corner-of-the-eye event … a photographer who concentrates on the periphery of the frame, he sees beauty in things that most people aren’t interested in. Thijssen’s work provides access to parallel worlds, of which we are occasionally also aware, however we prefer to ignore these unfathomable moments in time.

My ‘Electronic Instant Camera’, is a combination of an analog b/w videocamera and a thermal receipt printer. The device is something in between a Polaroid camera and a digital camera. The camera doesn’t store the pictures on film or digital medium, but prints a photo directly on a roll of cheap receipt paper while it is taking it. As this all happens very slow, people have to stay still for about three minutes until a full portrait photo is taken. /by Niklas Roy

Music and photography both have the capacity to communicate deep emotions effortlessly. I work on music for a long time, taking months to finish each song. In some ways, photography is the exact opposite: you’re capturing the immediate; it’s a spontaneous documentation of something that will never exist again.
